Last Friday, media mogul Harvey Weinstein was arrested in New York City after surrendering to police. The former producer has been charged with first-degree rape, third-degree rape, sex abuse and sexual misconduct, and first-degree criminal sex act in incidents involving two women. After voluntarily giving himself up to police, Weinstein appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court for his arraignment.
Accusations Against Movie Tycoon Started Flurry of Sexual Harassment Allegations
Weinstein has been accused of forcing one woman to have sex with him and another to perform a sex act on him. The claims against Weinstein were the first in a series of accusations of sexual assault or sexual harassment against famous men. In what is being called the “Weinstein Effect,” women who were hesitant to report instances of sexual harassment or abuse started staring sharing their stories of harassment or assault. Since October of 2016, actor Kevin Spacey, filmmakers Brett Ratner and James Toback, former NBC news anchor Matt Lauer, and many other high-profile individuals have been accused of varying degrees of sexual misconduct. These allegations soon evolved into a larger phenomenon often referred to as the “#MeToo movement,” in which women and med from all over the world revealed that they had been victims of sexual harassment or assault.
Weinstein Posts $1 Million Bail
Lead prosecutor Joan Illuzzi claims that the charges against Weinstein were had developed over several months of investigation. Illuzzi says that the investigation showed that Weinstein “used his money, power, and position to lure young women into situations where he was able to violate them sexually.” The prosecution also asked the judge presiding over the arraignment to issue an order of protection on behalf of one unidentified woman. Because he was not arrested as a result of an indictment but instead was arrested on a criminal complaint, Weinstein was not required to enter a plea. However, Weinstein’s lawyer said that his client will plead not guilty to the charges. Before leaving the court, Mr. Weinstein was forced to surrender his passport and post a $1 million bail. The former movie producer must also wear an electronic monitoring device and may not travel beyond New York and Connecticut. Weinstein’s lead attorney is confident that the charges against Weinstein will be dismissed, calling them “constitutionally flawed and factually unsubstantiated.”
