“Telling a teenager the facts of life is like giving a fish a bath.”
Arnold H. Glasow
The facts of life? Teenagers are “swimming in it” more than parents know (as the Arnold Glasow quote would suggest). Teenagers often face the same issues that adults face, without the benefit of experience to know how to process it all. In some areas teens face more challenges than adults. Take driving fatalities, for example.
Studies show that U.S. teenagers are four times more likely to be involved in a fatal car crash than adults over 20. In fact, car accidents are the number 1 cause of teenage death in the United States. Of note, two times as many teenage males are injured or fatally wounded in car accidents as teenage females. It’s no wonder that regulators are trying to do something to help protect teenagers (even from themselves). Underage alcohol use can be a contributing factor to these statistics. When teenagers drive under the influence of alcohol, the risk of fatal injury increases dramatically.
